Chicken & Pig
Whilst the name doesn’t immediately make one think of salivating food (or perhaps it does?), Chicken & Pig adds further to the culinary delights appearing in Pirie Street.
Run by the same owners as adjacent Pizza e Mozzarella Bar, C&P is almost small enough to be a hole-in-the-wall. Don’t let the size fool you though – true to its name, the takeaway-only outfit offers a range of perfectly tender, slow-roasted meats prepared in the pizza wood oven to hungry office workers each day.
Menu offerings are threefold – meat with salad, meat in a roll, or salad only. Perhaps most pleasantly surprising aspect for me was the range and dynamism of the salads. All are fresh, and presented beautifully, tempting diners with a rainbow of seasonal colour. Even kale gets a nod, featuring in a green salad along with broccoli and almonds. The use of raw, stripped rainbow heirloom carrots draws in the eye, and confirms how on-point C&P is with their produce selections. The dressings, ranging from chipotle to salsa verde, provide the perfect foil, and add a zing to the salad mix.
Meats on offer are chicken, pork and lamb. This, combined with the salads, truly mean there is something for everyone. For those partaking in the meat option, the meals are competitively priced, tasty and filling. My one gripe was the salad box – at $12.50, it was only half filled, and a little light on. They say you do get what you pay for though – and the quality here shines as bright as the fresh produce.
A word of warning – C&P is not for the late luncher, with the spot frequently selling out. Arrive early for the full range of options, and leave with a smile on your face.
