Maintaining a healthy eating pattern and an active life can be difficult day in, day out. It is for this reason (plus a myriad of others) that strict, traditional “diets” do not work. As soon as we restrict ourselves, tell ourselves what we “can’t” eat, instead of focusing our attention on what we can, we falter. After a while of restrictive eating and over-the-top exercise, we binge. We eat that whole block of chocolate and neglect our bodies for days on end. Then comes the cycle of destruction and guilt – we tell ourselves we can’t eat cleanly. We enforce (incorrectly) to ourselves that exercise is too hard.
The crux to forming and maintaining a healthy habit is to at all times remember this: eating well and exercising frequently is a lifestyle. It is not something that is developed overnight, offered in a pill, or easily fixed. Like the pages of a good book, having a healthy lifestyle ebbs and flows. It follows a pattern of clean, wholesome eating; using foods that nourish the body, not upset its delicate mechanisms. It embraces daily movement, in the form of yoga, running, strength training and other activities. It has rest days. It takes time out. It listens to itself.
