Since embarking on a strict Paleo diet for the whole of February (and loving it), it has been nearly a month since I have attempted another diet ‘experiment’. Interestingly, after coming slowly off Paleo and incorporating some previously restricted foods back into my diet (minimal grains, small amounts of dairy, occasional alcoholic drinks), my digestive issues immediately returned, and with a vengeance. I stripped back to basic eating again, generally (with the exception of weekends when I am a tad more relaxed with my diet) and felt better for it.
I am starting to get bored again however and figured it was time to change things up. To be honest, I am not in love with the idea of going vegan. I am a huge meat lover and also a believer the animal protein keeps us full for long period of time, meaning we don’t feel the need to fill our stomachs with nutritionally void foods. I have been toying with the idea of trying the vegan diet for some time and today, this article in the New York Times prompted me further in to action http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/07/us/taping-of-farm-cruelty-is-becoming-the-crime.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0 Going vegan for me will be even harder as I generally don’t eat a lot of carbs so my diet will be solely focussed on vegetables, perhaps quinoa occasionally, plus nuts, seeds and some fruit. I will largely be relying on natural fat sources such as avocado and nuts to keep me feeling satiated.
I am only testing this out for a week to see how I feel. Like with all diet experiments, I am not doing this to try to lose weight. I am simply interested to see how this way of eating will make me feel. I want to know what my energy levels are like, how soundly I sleep, how my skin responds and how clear my thinking is. I’d love to know if any readers of this blog are practicing vegans and how it makes your body feel.
