While not a regular reader of gossip magazines, I do pick up the occasional trashy mag at an airport or at the dentist’s office. My favourite sections are the parts where they “interview” celebrities about their diet and exercise regimes, or simply link celebrities to the latest diet craze. Today for example, I learnt that apparently Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow are fans of the new ‘fasting diet’ that is said to have taken the world by storm. This is interesting, considering Gwyneth Paltrow has just released a new cook book which is all about her love of organic and whole foods and her passion for cooking. It doesn’t really align well with her wanting to embark on a fasting diet…
The media loves to tell us what celebs are doing, diet and exercise-wise. I suppose the message they are trying to drive home is that with secrets from celebrities, us mere mortals can too look like that. Not only is this not true, but the majority of reports on these topics are vastly incorrect. Do you really believe that one celebrity only drinks green smoothies while another eats burgers everyday yet still manages to stay stick thin? Not true.
What I do like however are the candid interviews where celebrities are honest about their bodies, their diet and their love or hate of exercise. Sophia Vergara recently gave an interview to the New York Times where she confessed that she absolutely hates working out and has to hire a trainer simply to get her to the gym. Blake Lively is another celebrity who professes to hate exercise.
Reading about what celebrities eat and how they exercise can be destructive. Try to remember that much of this information is fabricated to make a good story. When it comes to your diet and exercise, only you know what is best for your body. Some people work best on low or no carb diets while others can tolerate carbs well and not put on an inch. You are the best judge of that. It is so important to not rely on fad diets based on flimsy information if you are trying to lose weight. Go down the tried and true path of healthy, wholesome eating and daily exercise and you are guaranteed to be treating your body the way it needs to be treated.
