Let’s face it – making goals is simple. It is sticking to them that is the hard part. We all start off new years, new months and new weeks with the best of intentions. We want to shed that extra 5kgs, exercise more, drink less, spend more time with our families, and win that promotion at work. But as the days and months go by, those goals silently slip from our minds as we ease back into the comfort of our tried and true routines.
Most humans are visual people. We like to see things laid out on charts and graphs. Information is easier to compute this way. It is easy on the eye and can be broken down and simplified. This is where a vision board can help you stay on track with your goals.
So what exactly is a vision board? A vision board is essentially a collection of images that represent your goals, or the life you want to live. It can feature everything and anything from all aspects of life – from your career, to your dream holiday, to relationships and your health. Old school vision boards used to consist of a pile photos or cut outs tacked together on a wall or pinned on a pin-up board. This was until some Silicon Valley genius had the idea to create Pinterest, a much easier way to keep all those pictures in one place.
The good thing about Pinterest is that you have the option of creating a private board. My present vision board on Pinterest contains all sorts of images – pictures that symbolise career success, clean eating, a healthy mind, strength in relationships, beauty in the home and many more. I never close this page on my Internet browser and in fact, I ensure it is the first thing I look at when I open my laptop every morning. Seeing these images reinforces to me the reason behind why I do what I do, and reminds me of what is important in my life. It also offers me a snap shop of beauty and calm that helps start my day off right.
If you prefer to operate in a technology-free sphere, the old school vision board will certainty work for you still. Grab any space you can - the back of a door, the front of your fridge, a wall in your office – and fill it will all the gorgeous images that represent where you want to be in your life. Stare at this wall every time you have a moment of doubt, or when life lands you in a difficult patch, and it will give you that boost you need to keep pushing onwards and upwards.
