Making it to the gym to exercise is one thing, but coming armed with a plan and executing it is an entirely different story. Below are several common mistakes many people make when attempting to workout. Make sure you don’t fall victim to these if you want to make your workout count.
1. Heading straight to the cardio area (and not moving)
While cardio should be incorporated into your regular exercise regime, save it for 2 days a week max. To get real bang for your fitness buck, you need to hit the weights.
Research some common weights exercises that target the muscle groups you want to tone up, and build on those exercises week after week, upping the resistance as you gain strength.
2. Only using the weight machines
For maximum workout efficiency, you need to be utilising free weights. Machine weights almost encourage laziness, by allowing you to comfortably sit down while you workout.
Standing (or sitting on a fit ball) performing resistance exercises with free weights causes you to use your whole body, and your key core strength, allowing more muscle groups to be exercised, not simply the one you are targeting.
3. Resting too long in between sets
I must admit, I suffer from this one from time to time. It is tempting to check Instagram or have a chat with a friend in between sets, however doing this could seriously be harming your workout efforts.
Leaving too long between exercises can give your muscles too much recovery time, meaning your resistance workout is having less of an effect. To counteract this, leave only brief periods (15 to 30 seconds) in between sets. This will also ensure your heart rate remains elevated, and you get your sweat on.
Yes, all of your friends may go to the same gym as you, but the gym is not the place to grab coffee and gossip. If you are serious about your fitness, try going to the gym when there are no social distractions. Go really early in the morning, or in your lunch break if you have to, to ensure you make the most of your time there.
Achieving your desired level of fitness takes dedication, commitment and execution. Eliminating the above issues will help you reach your goal faster, with less effort.
