We all know regular exercise is good for us, but just how good is it? And what effects do just one workout have on the body? Several, as it seems. The top four are listed here below:
1. Your focus improves
Exercise has greater benefits than just physical ones. Multiple studies have shown the positive effects exercise can have on mental energy too. This is due to the surge of blood to the brain that occurs when you begin a workout. That surge prompts brain cells into action, leaving us more alert and awake during the workout itself, and more focused afterwards.
These positive effects have been reported to kick in after a period of exercise lasting as little as 10 minutes.
2. Your risk of developing diabetes may be reduced
Without getting too deep into the science of exercise, a workout can make small changes to how fat is metabolised in muscle. Greater storage of fat in muscle has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity. It is the low insulin sensitivity that has been said to lead to diabetes.
3. Stress levels reduce
Exercise is a natural stress reliever. Ever noticed how a run outside in nature, or a sweaty weights session can put life in a better, more positive perspective? This is likely due again to the additional influx of blood to the brain.
4. Your mood will improve
Exercise causes a release of endorphins, which boosts mood and positivity following a workout. Another hormone secreted following exercise is serotonin, which has been well documented for its mood-boosting qualities and ability to fight depression.
Next time you feel like skipping your workout, think of these positive changes that can happen after just one small sweat session. It may push you to go that extra mile.
