It is a sad fact of life that we often put ourselves last. We battle with competing priorities – in the workplace, at home and in our community. When it comes to eating well and exercising frequently, we luck out, feeling depleted and exhausted after helping people around us, or pushing other priorities higher up on the list than our own health and wellbeing.
Below are 9 simple tips you can use to introduce more self-care and internal love into your life:
1. Take one step at a time.
You don’t have to do everything all at once. Start piece by piece, perhaps by writing down a goal, then taking small steps every day to get closer to achieving that goal.
2. Schedule ‘me’ time.
Just as you would with a work meeting or a social event, schedule some down time in your calendar. You may find that scheduling this time forces you to slow down and put yourself first, even if it is only for 30 minutes.
3. Eat healthy foods.
This one is a no-brainer, but eating a clean diet is one of the easiest things you can do to take care of yourself better. Same goes for quality of sleep. A killer diet coupled with decent sleep is an instant recipe for success.
4. Take breaks.
It’s ok to stop once in a while and check in with yourself. Consider what is no longer serving you, or how you can improve in some areas of your life in which you feel you are lacking.
5. Move your body.
Exercise is the quickest way to clear the mind and introduce those endorphins into your body. It can also double up as a social activity, so get sweating today.
6. Breathe frequently.
Oxygen restores your body. Regularly tune into your breath to assess the quality and depth of your breathing and correct where necessary.
7. Stop comparing yourself to others.
Comparison can be a deep source of unhappiness. We are all on our individual pathways. One person’s success is another’s stress, and everyone is fighting their own battles. Stay true to yourself and remain on your path. No one has control of your destiny but you.
8. Be inspired and don’t procrastinate.
See other’s activities as proof that you too can succeed and prosper.
9. Spend time with supportive people.
Rid your life of energy vampires. Build relationships with people you like, and the energy you get from those people will lift you higher.
Inviting more self-care into your life doesn’t have to be complicated. Check in with yourself frequently and stay true to your path.
