The wellness world has continued to grow in leaps and bounds throughout 2016 and as we approach a new year, several key trends are emerging that are set to explode in the coming 12 months.
1. Inflammation-fighting foods continue to rage
With the increased talk about inflammation - said by some health commentators to be a key contributor to everything from skin conditions to chronic disease - it is no wonder that the wellness world is seeing natural anti-inflammatory foods boom.
Tumeric lattes, ginger teas and the old favourite - sweet potato - are going mainstream, with the trend set to continue to grow. Get your fix of sweet potato with my fave sweet potato fries here!
2. Active wear is here to stay
Not only can you wear your favourite gym gear to the grocery store (*whether you worked out or not...*), the active wear industry as a whole is booming. Seems as though your favourite leisure wear may be creeping into the office now also, with the rise of "workleisure" (as wellandgood.com dubs it).
Active wear brands are jumping on the office bandwagon, designing machine-washable, office-appropriate business attire. Whilst not technically designed to hit the gym in, the pieces are intended to bring the best aspects of active wear - the comfort, breath-ability and technical aspects (wrinkle-free please!) to the corporate world. 3. Plant-based protein goes mainstream
The days of gross soy isolate whey protein are almost finally over (collective sigh of relief). Now you get get your morning smoothie protein fix the natural way, with pea and hemp proteins becoming more mainstream and readily available.
The growing push by millennials into healthier alternatives to traditional animal and whey based offerings has helped grow this industry, which is no longer considered niche.
4. Staying home is the new going out
We live in a time poor society, so when the chance comes to rest up at home, we grab it, even if that happens to be on a Friday night. That's right, staying in is the new going out.
No longer is being home-bound considered weird. There is a growing movement of people reclaiming their downtime, which is being reflected in everything from the increase in self-care and re-charging, to the growing trends in glamourising our bedrooms (and posting about it on Insta...) Seems as though burning the candle at both ends is finally no longer cool.
5. Natural beauty is a real thing
No longer confined to the back section of the hippy store, natural beauty products and cosmetics have hit the mainstream in a massive way. Like organic food, we are becoming way more attune to not only what we put in our mouths, but what goes on our skin.
Organic and natural beauty products are popping up everywhere, especially in the US with the launch of stores solely dedicated to natural beauty, to retail behemoths like Target, who are stocking their shelves full of better-for-you products.
So here's to 2017 - the year of comfort, rest and clean. Could this be the best year yet?!
