Do you find yourself scratching around for something sweet after dinner, no matter how full you are? The trouble with dessert is that it is a highly behavioural activity – most often than not, we don’t need something sweet to follow a meal, we want is because we are programmed to think that we need it, and our tastebuds won’t let up until we satisfy that craving.
Before you go binging on the chocolate in your pantry, try this recipe. It is incredibly simple, and 100% natural. The sweetness from the dates is enough to satisfy any sweet tooth, and the crunch, smooth texture and creaminess of the almond butter feels ridiculously decadent. An added bonus is the good fats in the nuts, which will keep you full and not looking around for more of the sweet stuff.
It is this simple:
- 1 – 2 fresh Medjool dates
- Crunchy almond butter (make sure you get either the freshly ground one, or look for versions where almonds are the only ingredients. Some varieties have added oils, sugars and salt.)
Halve the dates and fill each half with a generous smear of almond butter.
For something extra, top the almond butter with cinnamon, cacao, cacao nibs or coconut.
Note – you can substitute the almond butter for any other nut butter, such as peanut, cashew, walnut or pecan. Just make sure it is not the processed variety.
