Touted as one of the restaurants in New York City, The Waverly Inn certainly doesn’t disappoint. Everything here – from the service, the freshness and variety of the menu, and the setting in which diners enjoy their meals - is of the highest quality.
The restaurant is divided into distinct parts: street-side, front bar, restaurant and atrium. The inside dining space is softly lit and provides a romantic yet endearing setting for patrons, who are seated either in booth-style settings or traditional tables. Customers are also offered the option of the atrium area, in which a high glass ceiling hovers over the backspace of the restaurant, enclosing diners in an area that has the aura of a secret garden. The exposed brick walls here are lined with crawling vines and mounted with old-style lanterns. The old-worldy feel here is at its highest.
The menu is of exceptional quality. The stand out dish, and what the restaurant is known for, is the truffle mac and cheese. Offered in two portion sizes (and at different prices), the mac and cheese is infused with either white or black truffles and arrives intact before wait staff shave more fresh truffle on top, table-side. Extremely knowledgeable staff add to this experience, giving the complete and detailed run down of where the truffles are sourced on any given night.
Also of particularly high standard are the oysters, which come as a mixture of both locally sourced and otherwise (no further than the West Coast). Served with a simple vinaigrette and cocktail sauce, the flavours bring the taste buds alive, waking them up with the ping of freshness that only comes from great oysters.
The ambience here adds to the overall experience at the Waverly Inn. Diners are a mixed crew of older people, well-established Manhattanites and those tourists lucky enough to have been passed on this secret as a recommendation. Once a celebrity hang, photography is prohibited inside the venue.
If you only visit one high-end restaurant during your time in New York, make it your mission to make it the Waverly Inn. The quality, service and experience will leave you pining over this place time and time again.
