It's refreshing when you take a chance and it pays off. While walking home from the Meatpacking District a few months ago, we stumbled across this small but charming Italian restaurant on Washington Street.
A quick check of the Yelp reviews proved positive and before we knew it, we were seated at a romantic candlelit table for two.
You know a restaurant is going to be authentic when everyone, down to the young female bartender, is fluent in Italian.
For starters we went for the grilled calamari and, at $12, was so fresh and so huge that I could have eaten it as my main. Accompanied with an arugula salad, it was the perfect way to start the evening’s food appreciation.
For entrée, I ordered the whole boneless grilled Branzino and it did not disappoint. The fish was huge and so fresh. Served with a little herbs and olive oil, I was reminded of being in Italy. A simple side salad of radicchio and cherry tomatoes sealed the flavours together perfectly. George went for the skirt steak and was not disappointed. Again, the simplicity of the dish, served with shavings of parmesan and arugula on the side, made it a taste sensation.
We passed on dessert but apparently the Tiramisu is to die for. Also on the menu were a couple of pizzas, which looked and smelt delicious.
The menu was reasonably priced also which surprised me for such quality. The only potential downside is that the restaurant is cash only, however an ATM is available inside.
We will definitely be back. The fast and friendly service, coupled with great food may even make this a regular.
