The Organic Cafe and Market, Stirling

The Adelaide Hills is known for its fine foods and impeccable wine but there’s another player on the scene – the organic food market. The Organic Café and Market in Stirling delivers up fresh, organic and seasonal produce in its casual café, while the rear of the venue provides customers with an array of bulk, gourmet and specialty foods as well as fresh produce.

Located just off the main street in Stirling, the Organic Café still retains an element of Hills hippie charm. The crowd is mixed, with both older hills residents and younger yuppie types filing in to get their daily fill of salads, bruschetta, cakes and coffee.

The daily soup specials are hearty and healthy, with vegetarian options always available and most can be made vegan on request. Three rotating daily salads are also popular, however diners need to prompt their servers to be told that day’s special, as salads do not feature on the regular menu.

The market at the back sells a range of hard-to-find organic fare, including nut butters, ancient seeds (think chia and flax) as well as high-end honeys, tea and other specialty products. A small dairy and vegetarian case also features organic, often local produce, as does a small fridge stocked with fresh leafy greens, such as kale and other cruciferous veggies.

Prices here are steep however. Expect to pay nearly $9.00 for a large tub of organic hummus and $10.00 for a tub of almond butter. This is to be expected somewhat though given the store’s somewhat remote location and its range of foods.
